“We don't get to celebrate Mother’s Day but we always spend the day working together and we wouldn't have it any other way.”
Mother’s Day is traditionally the busiest time of the year for The Flower Shoppe - a family owned business for over 30 years. With a collective passion for flowers, Laurel, daughter in law Cheryl and granddaughter Stacey are three generations who love working side by side.
Laurel first opened The Flower Shoppe 30 years ago, after a stint working for Hinton Lloyd. 13 years later she sold it on to her son Barry & his wife Cheryl who were growing and selling roses from their Evandale rose farm. Barry and Cheryl’s daughter Stacey completed her floristry apprenticeship and the family connection continues to this day.
Since taking on Hullaballoo in September last year the store has become a one stop shop for gifts, the range growing to include balloons, chocolate blossoms, indoor plants and a range of gifts.
Since the onset of the pandemic, Laurel has had to take a step back from the business and is currently self isolating, Cheryl reflects “…The first few weeks of the pandemic we were all a little on edge and wondering whether we should keep our doors open - we decided to take each day as it came and it soon became obvious that our service was important - to be able to let someone know you're thinking of them without actually being able to visit is a really special thing to do”.
The trio are grateful and humbled by the community support that they’ve received, with one customer commenting, “You've been my florist through all of my ups and downs, my happy and my sad occasions and now I want to be there for you.”
The past month has seen an increase in The Flower Shoppe's online and delivery service, with many in the community sending flowers as a way of connecting with loved ones during self isolation. “We have a customer who has been with us for many years, who during this time is sending flowers twice a week… just to spread a little love.”
For Laurel, Cheryl and Stacey, Mother’s Day is a busy one, “We don't get to celebrate Mother’s Day but we always spend the day working together and we wouldn't have it any other way.”
