"this little enclave on George Street is the family’s home from home"
By Fiona Stocker.
Family comes first for Paula Nielsen, whose homeware and clothing store Kika & Co is right alongside husband Preben’s business TheMac Shop. With son Kaleb working with his dad, this little enclave on George Street is the family’s home from home.
Most Apple users would be familiar with TheMac Shop. The authorised reseller and service provider has been serving business, school and personal users of Apple products and accessories for the past two decades, with the quiet confidence of people who love their technology.
Owner Preben is hands-on, looking after customers’ needs personally whether they’re a teenager shopping for their first Macbook Pro or a householder impressed by the hands-free promise of the HomePod.
He’s backed up by a staff of nine, on the shop floor and in the on-site workshop where they do servicing and repairs. Dropped your phone? Knocked a glass of red over your keyboard? Preben’s staff won’t turn a hair and are here to help when the inevitable happens.
Next door, Kika & Co is Paula’s passion project and an indulgent home for all things natural. A serial renovator, Paula loves the fun of styling. Her mantra for the shop is ‘nothing out of a factory’. Whether it’s basketwork, stoneware, jewellery, candles or personal care products - all stock is handmade by artisans and designers and there’s an eclectic mix of local, Australian and international.
This shop’s all about community. That could be elegant homewares from the artisan Tasmanian community, or baskets woven the traditional way in Madagascar, with proceeds going back to those makers in their African village.
Winter means beanies and cuffs in new designs and soft woollen blends. These sell out quick keeping Launcestonians warm as well as cute. Two racks of clothing in natural fibres drape elegantly and have proven a hit with customers, so there’s more on the way. Paula’s favourite is the charcoal woollen cape made of fine Merino knit.
Her love of nature sprang from a childhood spent on the East Tamar, always out in the bush. Now, through textured handmade pieces and beautiful wearable fibers, she’s pampering us by bringing that glorious outdoors in.
