Get to know some of the businesses who can help you add instant warmth and style to your home this winter, with Inside Home and Gifts' new owner Ben Jenkins.

If you're looking for an antidote to the frosty mornings and rainy days of winter, then a trip to one of Launceston's many boutique interior and homewares stores is in order. A new throw or cushion and a scented soy candle can be all it takes to add warmth to your home.

Keep reading for our interior styling picks for winter, as well as where to find them.

"A new throw or cushion and a scented soy candle can be all it takes to add warmth to your home."

1. ADD WARMTH WITH COLOUR AND TEXTURE

Winter styling is all about layering textures and neutral tones to add warmth. Pair rich earthy leathers with deep forest greens, or copper hues and neutral tones.

Tip: The easiest way to achieve instant warmth is through the addition of some new cushions and a winter throw rug. The Sheep's Back sells a range of sheepskins for luxe winter warmth, while you'll find a great range of cushions at Acreage, Adairs, Bed Bath n Table, The Living Room and Hope and Me, stockists of New Zealand design house, Città, who produce an on trend range of cushions in linens, velvets, patterned tartans and microflorals.

2. DECORATE WITH PLANTS, FRESH FLOWERS & DRIED FLOWERS

Treat yourself (and your home) with a bunch of fresh flowers or an indoor plant from The Flower Shoppe, Tamar Valley Rose Shop or International Flowers & Balloonland. If plants tend to wilt in your presence, never fear, as a number of stores in the city, like Embellish, stock a great range of everlasting florals, whilst Acreage offer fresh and dried flowers as well as indoor plants. Want to try your hand at drying your own blooms? Everything you need to know to become a pro can be found in the beautiful coffee table book Cut and Dry, available for purchase at Inside Home and Gifts.

Tip: Start by choosing a vase and take it into your favourite florist - they'll be able to create the perfect arrangement to suit.

2. CHOOSE A WINTER SCENT

Winter warmth is about capturing all of the senses... introduce a candle or room diffuser in a winter themed aroma and your home will be transformed into a luxury spa retreat.

Here are our picks of the best winter scents:

VANILLA BOURBON | A refined vanilla fragrance with the rich scent of vanilla bean, musk and hints of amber, malt and tonka bean.

Shop: Gift Theory, 143 St John St.

(Mila Effie Botanical Reed Diffusers, Candles or Room Mist options available).

WINTER DEFENCE | A blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary.

Shop: Tamar Valley Candle Company, 122 Charles St.

(Reed diffuser, essential oil and soy candle options available).

Meet Inside Home & Gifts' new owner Ben Jenkins, who recently relocated from Adelaide to Launceston...

  • What encouraged you to make the move to Tasmania and Launceston in particular?
I was looking for a slower pace and to find a work/life balance that included time off on the weekends to go exploring (after 15 years in real estate I had rarely had a weekend off so this was a key objective for me in deciding what to do next work wise and where to base myself). It was important to be somewhere that had plenty to do with easy driving not far from my new home base. I researched Launceston and Hobart but ultimately kept coming back to Launceston, the community vibe, the beautiful architecture and just all round ‘easy living’ here. It was purely coincidental that I heard about Inside Home & Gifts coming on the market for sale, my ears pricked up, and I started stalking all of their socials… I made an offer without even seeing the store in person, and flew down a few days later to sign on the dotted line. The few days spent here had me so in love with our little city! When I got back to Adelaide I missed Launnie and knew I’d made the right decision.
  • What are your top tips for creating a cosy interior?
Texture, smell & lighting! I’m a big texture person, so pieces that feel good to touch and make you want to snuggle up are always winners for those months where we find ourselves spending more time at home. I view quality bedding and a beautiful throw rug as ‘investment’ pieces for the Winter season, and I take a ‘quality over quantity’ approach when I’m buying my seasonal bedding, as I’m a firm believer that your bed or sofa needs to be inviting in order for you to properly relax and unwind at the end of the day (especially during a Tassie winter!) Candles and ambient lighting are also a great way to make a room of any size feel warm & inviting. Walking into a room that is lit up like a football stadium doesn’t make you want to settle in and get cosy for the night, so choose a lamp that suits your personal style and ensure you opt for a globe that gives off a warmer, more natural light.
  • How have you found the Launceston winter so far?
Everyone keeps telling me I’m not a true Launnie local until I buy a Kathmandu jacket! My first -1 degree night was a bit of a shock to the system, but I’ve learnt very quickly that a chilly night makes for a beautiful sunny day and we have had some perfect days since I arrived. The cold nights haven’t stopped me getting out and about, I just find myself drinking more Tassie gin to keep myself warm!
