Venture up St John Street and you'll find a boutique community of retail and hospitality businesses, with the newest addition Gift Theory opening its doors just in time for last minute Mother's Day gift buying.
The store is the brainchild of Margarette Lung, founder of Mlla Effie, a brand of locally made diffusers, candles and and bath soaks. Many will be familiar with Mila Effie's beautifully packaged and scented goods, sprinkled with native dried flowers in a myriad of aromas from French Pear to Australian Bush.
New to retail, Margarette, a mother of two young girls, decided to open a bricks and mortar store after receiving an overwhelming response from the community. Conceived during last year's Covid lockdown, Margarette decided to turn her hobby into a business, "I started by purchasing 48 candle jars and 5kg of pure soy and a year later the Mila Effie range has expanded to include not just candles and diffusers but also body products like bath soaks, vegan lip balms, handwash & hand cream with more than 30 stockists all over Australia."
The focus of the Mila Effie range is that everything is made in Tasmania from the finest natural ingredients, with no nasties like artificial colours, synthetic fragrance, additives or paraffin blends.
Since moving to Tasmania from Hong Kong 3 years ago, the Lung family has settled into the laid back Launceston way of life. Margarette chose to open Gift Theory in Launceston's Upper St John St "...I love the precinct, you can relax, start with a coffee, then style your hair and buy some gifts for yourself and your loved ones, enjoy a beer and a cute dessert... all in one street!"
With a strong online presence and following, Margarette is often busy fulfilling online orders, with free Australia-wide shipping proving popular. Juggling the business with raising two young children is all in a days work for Margarette, who is often up late into the night "... Like all parents, we want to spend as much time with our children as possible so this can often mean staying up late to fulfil orders."
The store has proved popular since opening last month, with passersby enticed through the doors by the lifesize cherry blossom in the window.
Margarette invites you to browse Gift Theory's range of homewares, accessories and giftware - for the perfect Mother's Day gift to suit any budget.
