“…you’re in an altogether more colourful world.”
By Fiona Stocker.
Step into the bright space of Seagrass Design on the corner of Kingsway and York, and you’re in an altogether more colourful world.
The vision behind what’s on the walls, racks and floor belongs to owners Jamie and Kimberley McCabe, designers who have made art and fashion ‘beautifully collide’ in their vibrant shop.
The couple started the independent design label in Queensland before bringing it home to Tasmania. A graduate in fine arts at UTAS, Jamie takes the photographs which are the basis for Seagrass designs, and does the design work for their range in-house.
This he does while rocking a blue and orange striped hand-knitted beanie through the winter months, matched effortlessly with a Seagrass padded bomber jacket. He looks warm, colourful and at home, and it instantly makes a person want to throw on a similar outfit and brighten the streets up.
All fabrics used by Seagrass come from India and Thailand, and it’s a signature of the company that they’re ethically sourced and printed. Then it’s back to Tasmania to be whipped up into stylish, highly original and beautifully tailored fashion for men, women and children – dresses, jackets, jumpsuits and more that are each one-of-a-kind.
‘Our customers tell us they get lots of compliments when they’re wearing our clothes,’ admits Jamie.
The shop is filled with statement pieces for wardrobe and walls – Seagrass has digital art as well as fashion. The couple cleverly use their designs for smaller, everyday items too – homewares like mugs and toothbrush holders, keep-cups, triple milled soaps gift-wrapped in Seagrass paper, and even jewelry.
Inspired by the natural world, their designs are a natural fit for kids clothing – hats, overalls, dresses, each one perfect and unique like your bub. And if you’ve ever looked at your little one’s outfit and wondered why they can’t make stuff like that in your size, you need to visit Seagrass design. Because in Jamie and Kimberley’s world, everybody’s colourful.
