Seek shelter from a dreary winter's day by immersing yourself in Launceston's vibrant arts scene. Home to galleries showcasing Tasmanian artists, hidden street art, and boutique stores stocking affordable art to brighten your home, the city has something for everyone.
First stop on your tour of the city's art scene? George Street for a coffee at Sweetbrew (and a few moments to admire the murals adorning the cafe walls, painted by local Launceston Artist Agnieska Sikorska–Meikle). In fact delve a little deeper and you'll find art on every street corner of the city, from brightly painted power boxes that showcase the work of local street artists, to a mix of heritage and contemporary murals hidden up Launceston's alleyways.
On George Street you'll also find Gallery Pejean, a beautiful space showcasing Tasmanian contemporary art. With regular exhibitions and a wide range of art across a variety of mediums on display (and for sale) the gallery is a great space to find a unique piece of art, whilst supporting local artists. Prices range from $100 for a photo or embroidery to $10,000 plus for a large painting.
Director Margot Baird knows a thing or two about art, having worked as an art lecturer, art collector, practicing artist and Interior Designer. "...Artwork in a home should express the personality of the occupants, not be chosen to match the lounge or curtains." advises Margot
For those looking to invest in a piece of art, Gallery Pejean offers a 'Collect Art Purchase Scheme," a 12 month interest free loan to purchase works by contemporary Tasmanian artists, as well as 3 month lay-bys.
